I am Onemiddlechild, a Seattle-based textile designer and material researcher. I grew up in Talara, Peru, just minutes from the ocean, an environment where the coast consumes everything. Between the saltwater, the sun, and the wind, nothing remains untouched. I wanted my work to embody that exact impermanence.

My background is a collision of biology, fashion design, and art. I began with a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Washington, where I studied the intricate natural systems we belong to. Drawn to design, I later moved to Peru to earn my degree in fashion and reconnect with my heritage. While developing my graduating project, I realized science and fashion could coexist harmoniously. By merging my scientific background with my coastal upbringing, the concept for my sea moss bio-leather was born.

Today, my work challenges the "forced immortality" of the fashion industry by designing the "exit" of a garment. I develop bio-polymers and meshes from organic waste (seaweed, coffee, and fruit skins) that mimic synthetic vinyl, animal leather, and plastic. My practice centers on material permanence and biological decomposition.

Using a "Research in Public" methodology, I openly document my technical process and barriers. Whether through facilitating community knowledge exchange or developing work through opportunities like my Shunpike Arts residency, my goal is to pioneer a future for fashion that is as regenerative as it is beautiful.
